Fostering Cutting Edge Artwork
since 2006

3-Legged Dog is a community-oriented and artist-run production development studio for emerging and established artists and organizations that create large-scale experimental artworks of all kinds. From our home 3LD Art & Technology Center in Lower Manhattan, 3LD has built an unrivaled talent magnet, drawing artists from around the globe to New York to create large-scale, immersive and technology-driven projects in New York City. Since opening in 2006, we have hosted thousands of artists through our 3LD Residency Program, offering a unique experience with 24/7 access to specialized equipment, flexible space and expert knowledge, as well as the desperately needed time to fully realize their visions.

Why 3-legged dog?

About that name? It was inspired by a pit bull, Sid, who would perch on a loading dock outside an arts space Mr. Cunningham once ran in Houston, and jump down to chase passing cars. The dog was not only undaunted when he lost a front leg playing this dangerous game; he actually got better at it.

“The fourth leg wasn’t in the way, so he actually could occasionally get a chomp on the sidewall,” Mr. Cunningham said. “He became a symbol of for the requirements of artistic life in the U.S. : persistence of vision in the face of adversity.”

Our Mission

3-Legged Dog exists to produce new, original works in theater, performance, dance, media and hybrid forms. Our mission is to explore narrative possibilities created by digital technology; to foster artists’ self expression and skill through training initiatives; and to provide an open environment free of censorship for artists to create new works,  tools and modes of expression so that they can excel across a range of disciplines.

Here to stay

Five years after the destruction of our headquarters at 30 West Broadway on September 11th, 2001,

3-Legged Dog Media + Theater Group was thrilled to open our new home, the 3LD Art & Technology Center located at 80 Greenwich Street in Lower Manhattan, just 3 blocks south of the WTC site.

3-Legged Dog is the first producing arts group to sign a lease in the Liberty Zone and the first to rebuild downtown. A cultural anchor for the Greenwich Street Corridor, 3LD Art & Technology Center has been called a “quintessentially ‘hip location,’ a magnet in a still rough-around-the-edges neighborhood,” by Newsday and The New York Times said after 3LD opened, “A theater group offers hope at Ground Zero.”

Who Runs this Place?

3-Legged Dog Media + Theater Group operates
3LD Art & Technology Center and with the help of
a distinguished international network of artists and curators we curate the 3LD Cooperative Professional Resources Program, which includes long term production residencies.  Since 2006, 3-Legged Dog has provided subsidies to 3LD’s residents through traditional fundraising and through a progressive license fee structure in which more established better funded companies pay more to help support newer less well funded companies and independent artists. We create and support challenging large- scale, well-produced art focusing on artists and companies on the verge of artistic or organizational breakthrough. In our own work, we push scale, cooperation and community building with other artists as the most viable course to survival and growth. Our work has been seen in such venues as the Kitchen, La Mama, The Ontological-Hysteric Theater, PS 122, The Venice Biennale, The Signature Theatre Co. and at our new home, 3LD Art & Technology Center. Since 1994, we have become a mainstay in the experimental arts community and have been performing downtown ever since.

“In my opinion, most so-called ‘projection design’ for the theatre misses the opportunities provided by digital technology for the stage,” he says. Cunningham is the artistic director of the theatre company 3 Legged Dog, which since 2006 has run the performance venue 3LD Art & Technology Center in lower Manhattan, an incubator for the kind of work that Farrington is pioneering."

“Part of our mission is to create new tools and methods that help artists work across disciplines,” said Mr. Cunningham, who in his company’s early days financed development of the integrative live-video software, Isadora, that would become widely used in the industry. “Every project we’ve done so far stretches us aesthetically and technologically.”

SEPT 26, 2013

"The movie, like the play, is an intense, almost claustrophobic look at what happens inside a cockpit when pilots recognize and address mechanical failures. The set for each of the six emergencies is the same—a small, dark cockpit—but the number of actors changes depending on how many pilots or attendants were present during the actual event. The words are taken almost verbatim from the original transcripts, though long pauses are omitted and profanities are improvised where the official transcript says "expletive."

JAN 17, 2013

"3LD Art & Technology Center is a community-oriented and artist-run production development studio for emerging and established artists and organizations that create large-scale experimental artworks of all kinds."

“On Sept. 11 in the afternoon everybody who was working with the company at that time came over to my place at 24th Street, and we decided to continue doing what we were doing to the best of our ability despite the attack,” Kevin Cunningham, the executive director of
3-Legged Dog, recalled."
